COROSTIM

CoroStim is a Leonhardt Ventures startup within the Cal-X Stars Business Accelerator focused on utilizing vibrational energy to prevent plaque, calcification and blood clot formation in human body vessels and arteries as well as blood contact medical devices.

For decades vibrational energy has been used with high success to prevent barnacle formation on boat hulls.  This technology is now being applied to blood contact vessels and arteries in the body and also blood contact devices.

Vibrational Device for Preventing Thrombus and Plaque Calcification formation in Human Vessels, Arteries, Valves and Devices

Inventors:  Howard J. Leonhardt, Jeff Donofrio

Abstract

The present invention provides devices and methods for preventing or significantly reducing the risk of thrombus, plaque and calcification formation within human vessels such as the heart, aorta, heart valves and arteries and left ventricle assist and other blood contact devices with the use of vibrational energy. More specifically, the devices and methods of the present invention provide vibrational energy to blood flowing and blood contact surfaces within a chamber or vessel to prevent or reduce blood stasis and precursor plaque + calcification attachment to the vessel surface preventing clot formation, attachment, buildup and dislodgment and thereby preventing or significantly reducing the clinical risk of thrombus, plaque and calcification formation and subsequent blood vessel blockages and their resulting human suffering.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

It is an aspect of the present disclosure to provide an apparatus that delivers vibrational energy and may be used for preventing plaque, calcification and thrombus formation within human vessels including the heart, aorta, heart valves and arteries and also blood contact devices such left ventricle assist devices (LVADs) and other circulatory support products . It is a further object of the present disclosure to provide a vibrational therapy apparatus having a low profile vibrating node which may be attached to LVADS, heart chambers or in nearby pacemakers or ICDs to deliver a clot, plaque and calcification prevention energy to vessel surfaces at risk.

The invention is an implantable device producing vibrational energy that is transmitted to both flowing blood and device surfaces to prevent blood clot, plaque and calcification formation, attachment and dislodgment. The device is to be implanted into a patient’s blood flow, near the vessel containing or chambers, adjoining or internal portion, when the energy source is activated, may apply to the vessel or chamber blood flow to provide energy to improve the flow and surface properties of the blood vessel or device chamber and thus prevent blood clots, plaque and calcification from forming.

In accordance with the present disclosure, a vibrational therapy apparatus is provided capable of delivering vibrational energy for treating and preventing the onset of thrombosis, plaque or calcification within the blood flow or on device surfaces.  Other uses are also envisioned, such as treating heart valve clotting, plaque and calcification formation even within natural arteries.

  • The present invention is related to devices and methods for preventing or significantly reducing the risk of thrombus formation. More specifically, the devices and methods of the present invention provide energy to blood flowing within a chamber or vessel to prevent or reduce blood stasis and thereby prevent or significantly reduce the risk of thrombus formation. Additionally, the devices and methods of the present invention provide energy to the surface of the chamber or vessel, thereby preventing or reducing thrombus, plaque or calcification growth at the blood/surface interface. The present invention is ideally suited for prevention or reduction of risk of blood clotplaque or calcification formation in the atria in patients with atrial fibrillation, in blood vessels of patients at risk of clot formation, in areas adjacent to, or on, artificial heart valves or other artificial cardiovascular devices, and the like.
  • More specifically, the present invention provides a method for preventing thrombus, plaque and calcification formation or reducing the risk of thrombus, plaque and calcification formation in a patient at risk for thrombus, plaque and calcification formation, said method comprising providing the patient with a source of energy adjacent to or within a vessel or chamber containing flowing blood and activating the source of energy to provide energy to the flowing blood within the vessel or chamber whereby blood movement within the vessel or chamber is increased, thereby preventing thrombus, plaque and calcification formation or reducing the risk of thrombus, plaque and calcification formation. Additionally, the devices and methods of the present invention provide energy to the surface of the chamber or vessel, thereby preventing or reducing thrombus, plaque and calcification growth at the blood/surface interface.
  • We claim: 1. A method for preventing thrombus, plaque or calcification formation or reducing the risk of thrombus, plaque and calcification formation in a patient at risk for thrombus, plaque and calcificadtion formation, said method comprising providing the patient with a source of energy near, adjacent to, or within a vessel or chamber containing flowing blood and activating the source of energy to provide energy to the flowing blood within the vessel or chamber whereby blood movement within the vessel or chamber is increased, thereby preventing thrombus, plaque or calcification formation or reducing the risk of thrombus, plaque or calcification formation.
